Working Trot- Between Collected and Medium Trot with horse not yet trained and ready for collected work, but properly balanced and remaining on bit. Forward with even, elastic steps and active hocks showing development of impulsion.
Flat Walk- This is a four beat broken lateral gait between the Collected Flat Walk and the
Medium Flat Walk in which a horse not yet trained and ready for collected movements shows
himself properly balanced. This gait is a very much timed gait with a pronounced vertical head
shake that involves the whole head and neck, the head goes down when the rear leg lands and
the head comes up when the lateral front leg lands on the same side of the horse
. The rear foot
should track straight over the front track of the same side foot. This is called Over Stride. Both the
Flat Walk and Running Walk is a very smooth, gliding, comfortable gait for the rider.
GAIT EQUIVALENCY CHART
JACKSON-ORTLIEB-JACKSON

Collected Trot- Shorter steps with hocks well engaged, showing more energetic impulsion and greater freedom in
shoulders. Is lighter and more mobile. Neck is raised and arched with horse remaining on bit.
Collected Flat Walk- A very engaged Flat Walk where most of the horse's weight is carried toward the hindquarters. The frame is compressed; the stride length is
shorter than any of the other walk, with the horse taking higher steps. The horse is lighter in the front and more mobile in the Collected Flat Walk.
Lengthen Trot- Clearly more forward with increased thrust from hocks, lengthened frame with head coming slightly in front of vertical, maintaining regularity of gait. Remains
clearly on bit while lowering head/neck slightly. Must remain balanced while showing freedom through shoulders. Develops from Flat Walk, not Collected Flat Walk.
Running Walk- Clearly more forward with increased thrust from the hocks, lengthened frame with the head coming slightly in front of the vertical, maintaining the regularity of
gait. Horse remains clearly on the bit while lowering the head and neck slightly. Horse must remain balanced while showing freedom through shoulders. Develops from Flat
Walk, not Collected Flat Walk. As with the Flat Walk, the headshake/nod is also very timed with even a greater pronounced headshake/nod
Medium Running Walk- Between Running Walk and Extended Running Walk but showing more "roundness" than the latter. The horse is forward with clear and
moderately lengthened strides and obvious impulsion from hindquarters. The horse remains on the bit with head slightly in front of the vertical, while slightly lowering the
head and neck. Steps must be even and free.
Medium Trot-This is a pace between the Working and the Extended Trot but more "round" than the latter. The horse goes forward with clear and moderately lengthened steps and with an obvious impulsion from the hindquarters. The rider allows the horse remaining on the bit to carry his head a little more in front of the vertical than at the collected and the working trot and allows him at the same time to lower
his head and neck slightly. The steps should be even and the whole movement balanced and unconstrained.
Extended Trot- The horse covers as much ground as possible. Maintaining the same cadence he lengthens his steps to the utmost as a result of great impulsion from the hindquarters. The rider allows the horse remaining on the bit without leaning on it to lengthen his frame and to gain ground. The forefeet should touch the ground on the spot
towards which they are pointing. The movement of the fore and hind legs should be similar (parallel) in the forward movement of the extension. The whole movement should
be well balanced and the transition to collected trot should
be smoothly executed by taking more weight on the hindquarters with smooth transitions from/to Collected Trot by taking more weight on hindquarters.
Extended Running Walk- Covers as much ground as possible. Maintains same tempo while lengthening to utmost as a result of maximum impulsion from hindquarters. While
remaining on the bit without leaning or bracing, lengthens frame to cover more ground. The horses must be balanced with smooth transitions from and to Collected Flat Walk by
taking more weight on hindquarters.
