ENGLISH PLEASURE
The official rules handed down from The National Horse Show Commissions, which is only one of several different
organizations defining the Tennessee Walking Horse, but the most widely recognized authority states that:
"In all flat shod pleasure classes, a four-beat walking gait with a cadenced head motion (nod) is required. The head
motion of a Walking Horse is very important - if he isn't nodding, he isn't walking. Exhibitors must ride with light reins in
all three gaits, the flat walk, the running walk, and the canter.
The Walking Horse should move freely in each gait and proceed in a smooth fluid, rhythmic manner. At all gaits, the
horse should be flexed at the poll with muzzle slightly tucked. Stiff front or rear leg motion, stumbling, bucking knees,
lack of rhythmic timing, pointing, or favoring a particular leg, necessity for excessive pumping or bumping of the horse,
or any tendency to rack, pace, or other deviation from the true walk are not typical of the breed. The preceding
mannerisms are not considered good form and shall be penalized in judging.
A horse that has not performed all required gaits shall not be placed over a horse that has performed all gaits."
The English way of going Tennessee Walking Horse is usually the first impression most folks remember when they first
saw a Walking Horse, it's just pure grace in motion. It is the showcase gait of the breed, when all 3 gaits are preformed
the viewer usually walks away very impressed. Setting up the English horse and getting them to go through their gaits
does take some knowledge of the conformation of the horse, knowing the limits of the horse and a good knowledge by
the rider in knowing what to do and how to get it done based on their horses personality.
Based on the breed standards which call for specific performance guidelines, training for the English ride can be
challenging and rewarding. 3 basic gaits should be put on the horse, The Flat Walk, The Running Walk and The Canter.
An awareness of how to identify these gaits in watching a horse be put through their gaits is a must in order to get them
to do it while you are on their backs.
